We drove along the coast to Port Macquarie. On route we passed through a small village where bush fire volunteers were stopping vehicles to collect donations.
Port Macquarie had a lot going for it with long, sandy beaches, nature parks, cruises and camel rides. Unfortunately for us the weather was miserable so we made a hasty visit to the lighthouse to admire the views and stood for a bit watching some surfers on the beach.
Whilst at the lighthouse Andy got talking to someone who recommended South West Rocks so on the way up to Urunga we took a slight detour to take a look. Again the beaches here are meant to be lovely and there's an old prison you can look round but for us it was just cloud and rain so we took a quick look around and then headed back to the highway. The only bonus was a sighting of a dolphin in the sea and a kangaroo in a field.
We got to Urunga for 6pm and booked into our campsite. Our pitch was on the outskirts of the site and felt a bit like being in a lay-by but the place had nice showers and free wifi so we couldn't really complain. By the camp site there was a long boardwalk past some mangrove swamps and to the sea. It was nice to stretch our legs and have a quick walk without rain. Back at the site it was dusk and we saw loads of parrots flying to the trees to roost.
Parrots - I promise |
We settled into the campervan for the night and listened to the rain.
