Today Andy got a hair cut in a salon in Grafton (the note in the barber's shop said on holiday till Feb 17
th so the salon was the only choice). Today was New Years Eve and we were hoping to join in with the Grafton festivities however we'd spoken to the people in the campsite who said there were no fireworks and no real celebrations. We asked Stacey (Andy's stylist) the same question and she also said there was nothing in Grafton and to head to Yamba. She even went so far as to call the local police station to check the roads in Yamba wouldn't be cornered off in the evening.

We'd already called the campsites in Yamba a few days ago and hadn't been able to find a space but on Stacey's strong recommendations to 'head to Yamba' we thought we'd see if there'd been any cancellations. We went to the Tourist Information who called for us and it turned out there was space but we needed to be there by 5.30pm – the time was now 3.30pm and it was going to take an hour to get there so we raced to the Graftan site to hand back the bathroom key and get our $10 deposit back and then hot footed it to Yamba.
We were so pleased we'd made the move. The campsite in Yamba was much more livelier. There were groups of people all camping together who'd laid out big tables for dinner and the tent next door had people heading to them for afternoon celebration drinks. There was a real festive feel to the site.

Crazy tufted pigeons - reminded me of Andy in the morning |
For dinner we treated ourselves to steak and chips. Andy cooked the steaks on the barbie and I headed to the chippie for the chips.

After dinner we did a bit of a circuit of the town to find the beach where the fireworks were being set off. There were a couple of people about but when we returned at 11.45pm there were tons of people heading to the beach with drinks, party poppers and sparklers. The headland was much higher than the beach which gave everyone a really good viewing platform to watch the fireworks. They were laid on by a local pub but were spectacular lasting a good 10mins.

A smashing way to celebrate New Year.
Is it not normally ooooh....ahhhh for fireworks?
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year guys, looks like you are still having a good time. I am back to reality now in UK, but still waiting for my employer to line me up next assignment.
Enjoy the rest of your trip.
Cheers
