Applying the logic “when in Rome, do what the Romans do” we had decided that the main components of our Christmas Day would revolve around the beach and a BBQ.
Now I am not sure if the average Aussie Christmas Day involves doing the laundry but to be safe we did that also.
We had a leisurely morning, having breakfast and catching some of the family and friends on Skype – the UK's Christmas Eve, before heading back to One Mile Beach near Anna Bay.
The beach was as busy as any other day. It was a lovely day and the water was a very pleasant 19 degrees.
After we both had a good dip in the sea, attempting to body-surf the waves, we dried off and headed back to the campsite for a couple of rounds of Yhatzee, a read of a book in the shade of the van's awning before firing up the BBQ.
We cooked a load of meat and even a couple of shrimps. On the coal disposable BBQ it took quite a while but it was worth it.
By the time it was all ready it was starting to get dark and the midgies were coming out, apparently they do not have Christmas off, and so we ate in the van.
Late in the evening we spoke to the parents again over skype. This involved braving the insects and leaving the van to try and get a wifi signal by the open air BBQs.
It was great to speak to back home and whilst we enjoyed our day we did miss not spending it with friends and family as we would normally do.
Christmas in the heat does get taking some used to...!
