Mount Cook Village is dominated by a swanky alpine-hotel called 'The Hermitage' which seems to have a monopoly on everything else in the village. We had thought about stopping here but on a 3 month travellersbudget there was no chance. The Hermitage was offering a number of different shows and we opted to watch a 30min one on the Sky at Night which actually turned out to be really good and told us all about the stars in the Southern Hemisphere. After this we looked round a museum dedicated to Edmund Hilary who'd climbed Mount Cook after conquering Everest.
We had some lunch and then did a scenic walk to the Hooker and Tasman glaciers which was great, across swing bridges and over board walks. In parts it was pretty windy but fabulously scenic.
That night we stopped in a b&b in Omarama. I'd been excited about this one as we'd pre-booked an evening meal and well as b&b and I'd already been asked if we wanted salmon or lamb (I'd said either). It turned out the owner Michael, as well as being a fly-fishing artist, was also a great cook and made us an amazing 3 course meal with flower decorations on every dish. Mmmm went to bed very full.
Hi lovelies - great to keep up with all your blogs esp as they are coming thick and fast! Just shown MIA the picture of the two of you by the glacier and said "who are they"?. She replied with "emma and andy" and then said it looked like you were on squirrel nutkins island! Am sure Beatrix potter never travelled to new Zealand for inspiration but you never know!! Hope you are enjoying australia. Lots of love xxxx
