Today we got up early and went for a run along with what appeared the rest of Ipanema. It was 8am and already 30 degrees Celsius. Running along the purpose built running and cycle track the length of Ipanema beach was a great, if not sweltering, experience.
I do not think we got overtaken once and definitely overtook a number of runners and even one person on a bike, either I am getting faster or the pace is a lot more relaxed in Brazil. Take a look at the link below – the latter definitely applies.
Having spent a year trying to get fit and successfully completing a number of triathlons and a half marathon I intend to keep up at least some level of exercise whilst we are away... this was the first of many but possibly the most picturesque.
After the run we headed back to breakfast and then set out for the far end of Copacabana beach, stopping by at the famous Copacabana Palace Hotel.
We did not see Barry Manilow there, however apparently the Jonas Brothers (I have hardly heard of them either!) were in residence and had attracted a good 30 fans and 10 paparazzi.
Walking along Copacabana beach I definitely appreciated Ipanema a lot more. Copacabana was wider, appeared longer and at least at the far end had an air of better days in terms of its atmosphere.. it was by no means as relaxing as Ipanema. We walked from the Hotel towards the vast army barracks that sits on a rocky outcrop that splits the two beaches.

We then crossed the street and continued to walk the length of Ipanema beach which at 3pm on a Friday was teaming with people.

I am not sure if there was anyone was working in the city at this time...
After returning back to the hotel to dump our belongings we went for a dip in the sea for the final leg of our tri-beach experience. By now the sun was fading but the sea was still warm and refreshing. We then walked along the sea again watching the myriad of footballs being kept in the air as males and females alike played futevolei – it had to be seen to be believed.... you could not see for footballs.
After sunset, or lack of it due to the cloud, we headed back as the second wave of runners hit the promenade.
We grabbed a bite to eat, a quick beer and went to the room to pack as tomorrow we leave for the Iguazu Falls.
Emma also finally managed to book the coach from Iguazu to Buenos Aires on the internet... a mixed blessing given it is a solid 18 hours on a bus - we embark on Monday.

We thought of home today, especially as it was Nov 5th, however someone may need to explain to Emma the meaning of it when we return as she did think that maybe we would see some spectacular fireworks in Rio today!
